Bernadette tied her to the bed and wrenched the baby out of her.Īs soon as Pauline could walk, she left for the convent. When Pauline finally went into labor, she resisted giving birth, realizing that "if gave birth, would be lonelier." She told Bernadette she had decided to die and let the baby die too. They decided to conceal Pauline's pregnancy, and Bernadette insisted that Napoleon not show his face to Pauline again. Bernadette told her she would take the child. Bernadette saw her and stopped the miscarriage, and Pauline revealed that it was Napoleon's baby. She tried to make herself miscarry because she considered herself now wed to God. She had starved herself for so long that she was shocked to find out she was pregnant and had no idea when the baby would come. Pauline resumes her narration in the spring of 1918.
